Extract from the official war diary of the 1st Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

Violanies

5.10am Enemy made heavy attack, and took the trenches at the point of the bayonet. Battalion retired on RUE DUMARAIS under very fire, Manchesters came up in support. 8 PM Battalion withdrawn and went into BIVOUAC at last E of RUE DE BETHUNE. Casualties Captains Shore, Rich, Hartford 2/Lieuts Atkinson, Leicester, Greenhalgh missing Captain Forster, 18 N.C.Os & men wounded. 209 N.C.Os & men missing, including the Sergeant Major

Remarks – CAPTAIN MAHONY died in hospital. 2/Lieut T.L. Frost took over Command of the Battalion

  1. In memory of my Great Uncle, Corporal William McVeety killed in action at Violaines, 22/10/14. Hos body was never found.
