Extract from the diary of Lt Charles Brockbank, 1st Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

We landed at LE HAVRE today after a very, very, slow voyage, 16 hours to do the crossing. We were marched to a Rest Camp on the top of the cliffs, where we arrived in darkness, and found to our horror we were to be in tents. It was my first experience of tents, but I learnt a lot very quickly, as it began to rain & blow a gale. By midnight I felt the water coming into my valise so had to go out and stem the flood. After digging a really good ditch to drain away the water, the tent almost blew down & we spent a very miserable time till breakfast. I hated the sight of a tent
