Extract from the diary of Lt Charles Brockbank, 1st Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

Wednesday. Been awfully busy today as we were out digging trenches. I was terribly cold with just standing about watching the men dig, so took of my coats and took a hand at it. I worked hard for a fair time because I noticed the men did not like to do less than I, and also I had to get warm. It would not surprise me if I find myself too stiff to bend tomorrow when I get up. Whilst we worked, aeroplanes were continually passing above us on their way to the line or else circling round and going back to the ۥdrome. I aired my mongrel French on some French soldiers tonight
