Extract from the diary of Lt Charles Brockbank, 1st Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

charles brockbank

Sunday. We had to get up at 6.30 this morning and march the eight miles to dig trenches like last week. We got into a filthy state as it poured with rain the whole time, the trenches were a foot deep in water that we had to bail out with shovels, & the ground is all clay. I was very glad when we started for the billet again, but was a good deal more glad when we arrived there.
