Extract from the diary of Lt Charles Brockbank, 1st Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment
Friday. Took 50 men up on a fatigue tonight, myself in charge, & got back to billets at 3,30 A.M. in a vile temper. The transport wagon had cleared off before we finished our work, so, instead of us being able to dump the shovels in it we had to carry them all the way home & believe me a shovel get [sic] heavy at the end of a long night march. I could have slain the driver cheerfully.
