Extract from the diary of J.H.Lewis, 2nd Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

Ypres. Billeted in houses half starved + no money, weather very cold. Left Billets 7 pm for Ypres.

Extract from the official war diary of the 2nd Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

Battalion moved off to YPRES and on arrival proceeded to Infantry Barracks.
Subsequently the Battalion moved into billets at KRUSSTADT in support of 1st Suffolk Regt.

5.30 pm The Battn. left KRUSSTADT & marched to Infy. Bks. YPRES where 2 days rations Ammn. water etc. were drawn.

8pm The above orders were cancelled & the following substituted – Two Companies (Nos. 2 & 3) to march to Hd. Qrs. Suffolk R. & in combination with 1 Coy. Suffolk Regt. to take a German trench.
One Coy. (No. 1) to march to LANGKOP FM. in support.
One Coy. (No. 4) to draw rations for 3 Coys. Suffolks& 1 Coy. Welch R. & convey same to dug outs Sq. 1 33a 3.3. (Belgium Map 28) at which point the Coy. remained in support.
The attack of Nos. 2 & 3 Companies was checked by hostile machine guns which opened at short range.
Amongst the casualties were 2 Lts. G.KEATING & 2 Lt. J.KEATING Killed 2 Lt. WARD wounded.
