Extract from the diary of Pte B H Gregg, 5th Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

[Pte Gregg joined up in August 1914 in Chester. He survived the war and died aged 102 in Canada.]


Sailed 6 a.m. arriving HAVRE at noon. Dinner at HOTEL MODERNE & explore the town finding “school French” is no language so life has novelty. (This was before the days when rest camps & British officers were dull & abundant). Assemble at the GARE MARITIME 10 p.m. where we camped in the train complete with rations
