Extract from the war diary of Lt Charles Brockbank, 1st Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

Friday. A Glorious Day but still feel far from fit. Had to take charge of a funeral which a general attended so was a bit nervous but was agreeably surprised at the general’s flow of language when the coachman ran the hearse into the gatepost of the cemetery, we got on fine after that.
