Extract from the official war diary of the 1st Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

LARCH WOOD

Cooperated with K.O.Y.L.I. in an attack on the salient (40, 43, 45 & 46 trenches) captured by enemy. Attack took place at 2.30 am:, 2nd Lieut; Pike Stevenson severely wounded, & 2nd Lt. S.F.Smith killed while gallantly leading bomb throwing party along trenches 40 & 43; seventy yards of trench re-captured, but position untenable to lack of support from the left, (46 trench) so party forced to withdraw; attack generally unsuccessful and not renewed.  Relieved by S. Lancashire and moved into Divisional Reserve at OUDERDOM which was reached at 6.0 am on the 8th

2nd Lt S.F. Smith missing and believed killed.

2nd Lt Pike Stevenson wounded.

Regtl Sgt Major Francis wounded.
