Extract from the war diary of Lt Charles Brockbank, 1st Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

Friday.  I have an awfully swollen face today & it is very painful, also I feel very cheap. I buried young Lord Grenfell V.C. here today, it was a very plain funeral, but very pathetic. We buried three other officers so it meant we were up at the cemetery from 12.0 until 3.30 which is rather a long time. I went on the river again this afternoon later & it seemed to do my face good.
