Extract from the diary of Norman Hughes, “B” Coy, 1/4th Ches. Regt. 53rd (Welsh) Division

[Norman Hughes came from Neston]

Route March:-[B]reakfast 6 a.m.

Bde. move off 7 am.

120 rds amm. per man.

Route:- Carrington, Cople, Northill – Moggerhanger – Willington – Bedford Bridge.

My Boots bad – sore on right heel. Finish quite fresh  though. Distance 19 ½ miles.

Wrong message concerning a halt. Restart 2 min. behind time – Make it up in the first 2 ½ mil.

Bedford well hidden town. Ammunition of my recruits’ all accurately accounted for.

Field course still to fire.

Half the [men] sure of a holiday in sunshine. Pay – 7/-.
