Extract from the diary of Norman Hughes, “B” Coy, 1/4th Ches. Regt. 53rd (Welsh) Division

[Norman Hughes came from Neston. In Gallipoli with the 4th Bn]

In the Fire Trench.

System of Working, Watching & Resting

Whole trench divided into squads of 18 men.

6 men Working for 4 hours

6   “      Watching “   “    “

6   “      Resting    “   “    “
Working Men do all fatigue.

Watching Men divided into two sets; 3 on Sentry 3 sitting down by their sides, always alert.

Sentries must not smoke.

“For those that work so shall they eat”

“Keep Diligent, Watch and Pray”

“Come unto me & I will give you rest.”
