Extract from the war diary of Lt Charles Brockbank, 1st Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

Tuesday.  It is raining cats & dogs again today so my oilskin is useful. I got so fed up with doing nothing this afternoon that I went over to WIMEREUX for a blow as it is jolly windy. This morning we had a “Swankparade” as General Alexeis came to do honour to the dead soldiers so we had to take 50 men & 3 officers up to the cemetery but when we got there we were given no instructions so did not do much good. I heard the addresses & got a fine view of the whole ceremony but we all got wet through to no purpose.
