Extract from the war diary of Joseph Norton, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

We left Le-Plantin and came into the trenches. We had to have top boots on as the water was up to the waist. It was most awful weather for we were surrounded with water and it was very cold and freezing. One could not sleep as it was so cold
