Extract from the war diary of Lt Charles Brockbank, 1st Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

Monday.  The French troops are still passing through the village. We worked on “gun-mounting” this morning & this afternoon went for routemarch at the new rate of 2 miles per hour. It is awfully slow & it seems to tire the men more than the old pace. Bill Innes went on leave this morning, & is only due back on the 28th. which seems a long way off
