Extract from the war diary of Lt Charles Brockbank, 1st Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment
Sunday. We had a billet inspection by the C.O. this morning & then a church service but owing to my bad cough I did not go. They buried the dead horse in a Frenchies garden & he did not appreciate it but he had to lump it. The old man next door died during last night. He was an interesting old chap, had been 42 years in the French army & I used to go in and talk with him occasionally. “B” Coy played “D” Coy at footer today & the latter won easily owing to their having their boots studded & “B” having none.
