Extract from the war diary of Lt Charles Brockbank, 1st Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

Tuesday.  We were roughly five & a half hours late in reaching MERICOURT & when we got there, could hear a bombardment going on, just where our part of the line was, so I was not really surprised when I found all our Battn “Standing–to” ready to go up if the attack showed signs of being big. Fortunately for me we did not have to go up as really I don’t think I could have managed it with being so tired. I got to bed at 9.0 p.m. so did not do too badly considering the guns were still going hard.
