Extract from diary of Private J. T. Stone, 6 Platoon, B Company, 5th (Earl of Chester’s) Cheshire Regiment

Shelled something awful had quite given up hope of getting out alive but pulled through to get out at 6 oclock had not gone 50 yards before maxim was turned on us had to ly flat for nearly ½ an hour in mud. When we got back we were all absolutely beat.
