5 April 1916

Extract from the diary of A E Dixon, “H” Coy, 3rd Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

[Dixon went to the trenches at dusk on 2 April ] and or the dawn of [5 April]

Made a gallant charge + took 3 lines of Turkish trenches, by 6-30am we had advanced about 2 mile and all of a sudden came face to face with the Turks fire who where entrenched + us out in the open ground. We where [sic] lying in the open under the boiling sun + heavy fire until dusk + then retired back to the trenches behind.
