Extract from the war diary of John Moore, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

Came out [of trenches] & it was called on Parade we had done well in the trenches & had had a rough time since coming out & as we was first of Kitcheners to come out here, & had proved ourselves best division we were going to be honoured by 10 dys special training for open filed work, we were all run down, this was to give us rest at night & drill in day time to get ready for final onslaught on Germans expected next month (May) expecting all being over by July hope it is correct, we shall be in the thick of it being now 1st line Regiment, to this training ground we have have 3 days marching, straight from Boars Head trenches did 8 miles on 20th, 11 miles on 21st Good Friday, & on Saturday 15 miles full pack.
