Extract from the war diary of Lt Charles Brockbank, Machine Gun Corps
Thursday. Today we had an exciting incident. They lobbed a six inch right onto the roof of our dugout, blowing a six foot hole in it. The miracle was that no one was touched, out of the eight men in it, except the Sergt. who suffered from shock. I was standing in the open road about eight yards away when it burst, absolutely petrified until it burst, when I flung myself flat & was untouched, but got the wind up badly.
