Extract from the war diary of Lt Charles Brockbank, Machine Gun Corps

charles brockbank

Monday.  Wandered all round the country this morning in the hopes of finding the Company & eventually landed on them at a bivouac at mid-day just outside BETHUNE. At 2.0 p.m. I had to go & prospect all the M.G. positions in the south of the canal sector. This was a very long job & so as a result I only got back at 10.0 p.m. very tired indeed. I rigged up my valise with a ground-sheet over it to keep out the dew & at midnight it started to rain and poured almost continuously until 7.30 when I decided to arise.
