30 May 1916

Extract from the war diary of Lt Charles Brockbank, Machine Gun Corps

charles brockbank

Tuesday.  When I made an examination of my kit I found I had absolutely no dry clothing, everything soaked. I went around looking for a billet & was given one with the Herts officers, which billet was a huge room holding 30 officers & capable of holding 30 more. That night they made themselves very objectionable & when they found I was asleep, threw a fieldboot at me. Fortunately this missed me or there would have been a murder done. (It gives one a poor opinion of a regiment when the officers behave like this).
