Extract from the official war diary of 1st Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment


No.19250 Sergt. DUNCALF returned to our trenches.  He had been missing since 4th and had been in the hands of the Germans.  He was wounded and very exhausted having been without food.  Enemy threw over some trench mortar bombs during the evening to which our artillery replied.  Work on consolidation of the craters continued at night with assistance of 1 company D.C.L.I.  A wiring party working under 2nd Lieut. B. DUCKWORTH had 5 casualties (3 died of wounds) owing to trench mortar and shrapnel fire which was continuous throughout the night, but the work was competed.  The bodies of two men of 1/ NORFOLKS were brought in during the night.
