18 June 1916

Extract from the official war diary of 11th Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

After a rest of 18 hours, the Battalion resumed its march. During the day Divine Service was held in an orchard by the Rev H. Kidd, who was recently placed in spiritual charge. Leaving BERNAVILLE at 11.30 p.m. the Battn marched with the Brigade to ST. OUEN, which town it reached about 3 am. The town was overcrowded with Troops, so billets were dispensed with & a Bivouac was formed in a large orchard S of the Railway. Fortunately the weather conditions were delightful, & a thoroughly good rest was enjoyed, and all ranks appeared “as fresh as paint” when they turned out at 10 am on the 19th for their early morning run.
