Extract from the official war diary of 10th Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

BERNEUIL

New draft 55 other ranks joined for duty, smart looking men. During the morning an unfortunate accident occurred caused by the explosion of a bomb. L/C ROWLINSON and PTE NASH were killed, Pte BELSHAM died of wounds, L/C SCHOFIELD,  PTEs PRICE, DUTTON and CROSS wounded. L/C ROWLINSON and PTE NASH were buried in the cemetery at BERNEUIL the funeral being attended by a number of officers & men of the regiment. 2LT Goss J.H. joined for duty. We marched to PUCHEVILLERS at night about 16 miles. The men including the “BANTAMS” stuck it very well. 14 men fell out including 7 of the new draft who had already had a march in the morning and 5 bantams. We arrived at PUCHEVILLERS at 5 AM the next morning.
