Extract from the war diary of Lt Charles Brockbank, Machine Gun Corps

Monday.  Had a glorious bathe in the canal this morning & then this afternoon went to BETHUNE in the mess-cart for a change. I tried guessing ‘plane ranges & verifying them with the Barr & Stroud but found I was a terrible way out, short sometimes by over 1,000 yards. Went for a row on the canal but got fed-up when my hands got sore.
