20 July 1916

Extract from the war diary of Joseph Norton, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

At midnight our Brigade made an attack on the German trenches, but we were repulsed with very heavy losses, as the barbed wire wasn’t cut, it was horrible to see the dead and wounded lying about, scores. It was impossible to recognise and to walk down the trenches without walking on the dead was impossible.
