Extract from the war diary of Lt Charles Brockbank, Machine Gun Corps

Friday.  We move off this afternoon at 2.0 on a long march so we had a bathe in the Canal. No. 3 Section beat Nos. 1.2 & 4 in a team race. Robert Megson appears to be in this district according to a description by my groom. We have marched twelve miles in a perfectly burning sun & talk “a bout” [sic] dust, it was like marching after a motor. Simply smothered in dust. We are billeted in an awfully nice little mining village right up on the top of some hills. I have got a decent bed so am retiring at about 8.30 p.m. The village is called COUCHY-LE-TOUR.
