Extract from the diary of Lt B H Gregg, 5th Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment [Lt Gregg joined up in August 1914 in Chester. He survived the war and died aged 102 in Canada.]


Thur Training in drill & pioneer work begins. In the evenings the C.O. holds long & tedious office hours & the Bn smartens itself up. Squad & aims drill to day.

R.C. Farm

General Routine.  Two companies proceeded to Locre for baths and clean change.  The Bn. furnished the usual working parties.  During a football match (Officers v Sergeants) the enemy shelled the billets of the S.W. Borderers, with whiz-bangs – Seven men were injured in one dug-out.
