Extract from the official war diary of the 1st Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment


Fine day but cold night.   Operation Order 67/2 received cancelling Operation Order No 67 & 67/1.  Commanding Officer and Company Commanders went up to reconnoitre ground again, our objective now being MORVAL

  Telephone message received from Brigade Major warning us that we should probably move back this afternoon.

  2pm Transport Officer arrived with information that Battalion will go back to OXFORD COPSE for 48 hours as attack postponed.  Transport difficulties still great owing to state of roads

  Operation Order No67/2a & 67/3 received detailing Battalion to withdraw at 5pm

  Battalion withdrew by Companies at 15 minutes interval to OXFORD COPSE and settled in bivouacs by 8pm
