Extract from the official war diary of the 6th Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

Beaumont Hamel trenches

Our artillery very active on right from midday.   Enemy shells supports with HE for some hours during 4pm to 9pm. most of shells falling on an abandoned gun position.   Front line and saps shelled lightly with HE and Rum Jars without much effect.   Rain fell during evening.

1 OR killed.     1 OR wounded (at duty)     12 OR rejoined from hospital.

6 OR Reinforcements.       No 2197 Pte Lee H awarded Military Medal for gallantry in the field.
