Extract from the war diary of Lt Charles Brockbank, Machine Gun Corps
Sunday. They have shelled us incessantly all day with 8 inch, so we are on the lookout for a counter attack. They put a 12 inch within five yards of our gun blowing two men into the air (shell-shock cases) so I carried on with Fick and Hurry, dodging shells for five hours in fact until 1.0 A.M. when they gave us a rest. They twice attempted the flammenwerfer attack during the night but they were squashed before they had time to get going.
