Extract from the war diary of Lt Charles Brockbank, Machine Gun Corps

Friday.  Got up at 6.30 A.M. to go round the SCHWABEN. Freezing hard but the ride was alright. They shelled us badly all the way up to POINT 91, so we gave it up as a bad job. Andrew got a wee piece of shell in his neck, but he is all right. My nerves are terrible I dont know what to do with myself. I dare not report sick as we are so short, dare not take drugs, so what shall I do. We rode back and then on to SENLIS our new H.Q. for officers. We are in tents.
