Extract from the official war diary of the 11th Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

The battalion took over a new sector East of PLOEGSTEERT WOOD relieving the 9th Batt. Loyal North Lancs Regt of the 74th Brigade. This was the exact sector held by the battalion last year and is bounded on the north by the Strand and on the south by LOWNDES AVENUE. The dispositions in this sector was 3 Coys in the front line and immediate support and 1 Coy in the support line. Battalion H.Q. was established at RIFLE HOUSE. The trenches in this sector consist almost entirely of breastworks and work had to be constantly carried on in the pumping and draining the trenches and in building up and revetting the trench sides and parapet in places where they had fallen in.
