Extract from the official war diary of the 11th Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment


As it was intended to carry out a raid upon the German trenches upon December 25th in the neighbourhood of LE GHEER road a raiding party consisting of Major HARGREAVES  2/Lieut KNOWLES  2/Lieut WRIGHT and 50 O.R. was withdrawn from the trenches and sent down to the camp of a Tunnelling Company of Canadians R.E. about 1 mile East of BAILLEUL on the BAILLEUL – ARMENTIERES road where daily practices were carried out. All the men taken for the raiding party were volunteers and sufficient men volunteered to form a raiding party three times the size of that actually required
